U.S. drone strike in Pakistan kills at least 10 militants, security officials say

A U.S. drone strike on a military compound early Thursday killed at least five people in northwest Pakistan's lawless tribal region near the Afghan border, security officials said.

The drone fired two missiles on a house in Miranshah, the capital of North Waziristan, destroying the property and killing several people, sources told Geo TV.

The broadcaster put the death toll at nine, while AFP reported that five people had died.

"So far five bodies have been recovered from the compound, which is ringed by militants," a security official said.

The strike came after one Wednesday that killed four militants in the same region, and followed a summit of NATO alliance leaders in Chicago earlier this week.

Washington considers Pakistan's semi-autonomous northwestern tribal belt the main hub of Taliban and Al Qaeda militants plotting attacks on the West and in Afghanistan.

Pakistan says the missile attacks are counterproductive, violate its sovereignty, kill civilians and fuel anti-U.S. sentiment.
