Lords reject child support plans

House of Lords generic imageThe Welfare Reform Bill has already run into trouble in the Lords

A Conservative peer is trying to force ministers to revise the welfare bill to prevent single parents being charged to use the Child Support Agency.

Former Lord Chancellor Lord Mackay said children may lose their maintenance because women would be unable to use the CSA to chase an absent partner.

The government says the system will remain subsidised to help the poorest.

But if the amendment is accepted it will be the latest in a series of defeats for the government on welfare.
