US to resume full Burma relations

Breaking news

US President Barack Obama has described Burma's amnesty of prominent dissidents as a "substantial step forward" on the path of reform.

Mr Obama said he had asked officials to take "additional steps to build confidence" with Burma.

Most of the country's high-profile prisoners of conscience are thought to be among hundreds released from jail.

The move is seen as one of the key demands of Western nations before international sanctions can be eased.
