Man held over dog attack on girl

Police tapePolice said the child was likely to be scarred for life after the incident

Police are trying to trace the owner of a dog which bit off part of a six-year-old girl's ear during an attack in Chingford, Essex.

The girl, who also suffered injuries to her neck and shoulder, has undergone surgery at a hospital in Essex where she will stay overnight.

The attack took place at Pole Hill, Woodberry Way, Chingford at 12:00 GMT in front of the girl's parents.

The dog is thought to be a black and white bull terrier.

The owner of the dog is described as a white male, aged approximately 38 to 40 years old, with cropped blonde hair.

They had left the scene when the Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance arrived.

Det Sgt Stuart Cheek, of Waltham Forest police, said: "This was an appalling incident that left a young child with serious injuries which are likely to scar her for life.

"I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened, was in the area at the time of the attack, or has noticed anything since that might assist the investigation, to get in touch as soon as possible.

"It is crucial that we find those responsible so that no-one else is put at risk by this dog and its owner."

Anybody with information can call Waltham Forest police on 020 3276 0967 or, to speak anonymously, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
