Student shot in street gun attack

A man has died after being shot at close range in the street in Salford.

Armed response officers were called to Ordsall Lane just after 01:30 GMT following reports that the man, in his early 20s, had been injured.

Police said the victim was with friends when they were approached by two men, one of whom shot him with a handgun.

It is unclear if the victim or his friends knew the men and Greater Manchester Police are treating the shooting as an "unprovoked attack".

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Heywood extended his "sympathies to the man's family and friends".

'Pursue every lead'

"We are only a few hours into our investigation and at the moment it is not clear exactly what has happened in the crucial moments leading up to the shooting, nor does there appear to be any obvious motive," he said.

"At this stage, we are treating this as an unprovoked attack that has tragically ended in a young man being shot dead at close range."

Mr Heywood sought to reassure the local community and stressed "we will pursue every possible lead to identify the gunmen and bring them to justice".

Officers from the force's major incident team are working with colleagues from the Salford division in investigating the shooting.

"[We] will be working round the clock on the investigation and we are already interviewing a number of witnesses to establish the exact circumstances leading up to this man's death," said Mr Heywood.

Witnesses or anyone with information about the killing should contact police or Crimestoppers.
