Argentina's leader faces thyroid cancer surgery

Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez will be operated on for papillary thyroid carcinoma on Jan. 4, a government spokesman said Tuesday.

Spokesman Alfredo Scoccimarro said the carcinoma was detected during a routine medical exam on Dec. 22.

Scoccimarro said Tuesday that doctors confirmed that the cancer hadn't metastasized or affected her lymph nodes.

The 58-year-old Fernandez will be operated on in Buenos' Aires Hospital Austral on Jan. 4, 2012. She will rest and take time off from her duties until Jan. 24.

Vice President Amado Boudou will run the country while Fernandez is on medical leave.
