Police say dozens of militants attacked a paramilitary fort in northwest Pakistan, killing one soldier. Fifteen other soldiers are missing and are believed to have been kidnapped.

Police officer Ejaz Abid says the attack occurred early on Friday in Tank district

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ehsannulah Ehsan claimed responsibility for the attack in a phone call to The Associated Press. He claims around 30 soldiers were kidnapped.

But another Taliban commander who said he carried out the attack, Asmatullah Shaheen, told the AP he had 15 soldiers in his custody.

Ehsan said the attack was in retaliation for the death of a local Taliban commander. He says militants plan to kill the kidnapped soldiers.
