Reshaping the Debate on Climate Change - Mary Robinson

Reshaping the Debate on Climate Change - Mary Robinson

Mary Robinson's lecture took place on November 23rd 2010, and focused on reshaping the debate on climate change to focus on justice in the developing world and how addressing the issue of climate change must address the issue of justice also. According to the Mary Robinson Foundation - Climate Justice: "The debate on climate change is becoming tense and obscure. It is being lost. It is time to change it - and the change means talking about two things: what we can do right now, and who will suffer if we fail." The lecture was the eleventh in an ongoing series organised by the EPA. The series continues in 2011 with Climate Change -- The Transport Challenge on February 1st and Climate Change & Agriculture : ensuring food production is not threatened on Tuesday 15th March. Both of these talks will also be made available on YouTube. You can watch all the videos in the lecture series on YouTube, see: www.youtube.com Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations and most recently Head of Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization initiative has established the Mary Robinson Foundation -Climate Justice. The Foundation is a centre for thought leadership, education and advocacy on the struggle to secure global justice for victims of climate change who are usually forgotten -- the poor, the disempowered and the marginalised across the world. The Foundation is based at Trinity College, Dublin. The EPA has established a ...

Shell Eco-marathon Americas: "Post COP15: The Road to Mexico" Big Think Panel Discussion

Shell Eco-marathon Americas: "Post COP15: The Road to Mexico" Big Think Panel Discussion

The Shell Eco-marathon Americas, held in Houston March 26-28, 2010, was the perfect setting for discussions of the world's energy future. For many years Shell has challenged teams of young people from high schools and colleges to design, build, and test energy efficient vehicles and compete to see which team's vehicle can travel farthest on the least fuel. To Houston came teams from all over the US and Canada?Shell also hosts Shell Eco-marathons in Europe and Asia?bringing solar cars, hydrogen-fueled cars, ethanol-fueled cars. (And, yes, some vehicles powered by gasoline.) It was a soap-Box Derby for geeks, with vehicles sleek and futuristic, boxy and plain, and altogether cool. Beyond the Shell Eco-marathon there is another race going on?a race between the world's growing energy needs and the earth's carbon carrying capacity. That race involves technical challenges, trade-offs, and other issues that are infinitely more complex than the daunting challenge the students faced. To explore it, Shell and Big Think produced a series of panel discussions about the world's energy future. This luncheon panel discussion, filmed and broadcast live online, focused on "Post-COP15: The Road to Mexico"and was moderated by Thomas A. Stewart, Chief Marketing & Knowledge Officer, Booz & Company, and featuring Vinod Khosla, Founding CEO, Sun Microsystems; Founder, Khosla Ventures, Marc Stuart, Co-Founder, EcoSecurities and Peter Voser, CEO, Royal Dutch Shell with comments from name Norberto ...

The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age

The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age

The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2010-04-14 - For the first time in recent memory, the CEOs of America's top two coal mining companies, and a leading international company, came to Capitol Hill to answer questions on their positions on climate change, clean energy policy, and the challenges that face their industry. "Just as our national energy policy is at a crossroads, so, too, is the coal industry," said Rep. Edward J. Markey, who chairs the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, the committee that hosted the CEOs. "Whether it's climate science, the viability of 'clean coal,' or safety concerns, I believe Congress requires answers from the coal industry on their ability to be a part of our clean energy future." As Congress continues to push for a comprehensive clean energy and climate bill, questions remain regarding the coal industry's position on the essential science of climate change and their potential to provide cleaner, lower-carbon fuel in the decades to come. The House-passed Waxman-Markey bill offered a pathway for coal to transition to carbon capture and sequestration technologies. The coal mining industry has seen significant developments over the last two weeks. A mining accident in West Virginia has renewed questions about the safety of coal extraction, and the US Environmental Protection Agency has offered new rules on the environmental and health impacts of ...
