JAYAPURA, Indonesia ? Rioting has erupted in the restive Indonesian province of Papua after a prominent independence activist was shot and killed by police.
Police said dozens of angry people killed an onlooker from Java island and burned five shops, two cars and more than 20 motorbikes on Thursday. They say they've arrested three men and seized handmade bombs, arrows, machetes, documents and separatist flags.
Papua police chief Maj. Gen. Bigman Lumban Tobing says police on Thursday shot and killed Mako Tabuni, the deputy chairman of the National Committee for West Papua. He says Tabuni grabbed a weapon from an officer who was trying to arrest him.
Tabuni was rushed to a hospital and died hours later. Police suspected him of involvement in several recent shootings.
