Brazilian Cameraman Shot To Death During Police Operation

SAO PAULO -- A Brazilian television network says one of its cameramen has been shot to death during a police operation against drug traffickers in a Rio de Janeiro shantytown.

The Bandeirantes channel says 46-year-old Gelson Domingos was hit in the chest by a rifle shot while covering the police confrontation with gang members at the Antares slum in Rio's west side early Sunday.

Bandeirantes says in a statement that Domingos died despite wearing a bulletproof vest. It wasn't clear if the shot missed the vest or if the bullet went through it.

The channel says it believed the shot came from a gang member.

Domingos is survived by his wife, three children and two grandchildren.
