Syrian violence reaches Lebanon

Syrian violence reaches Lebanon

Thousands flee Telkelakh in western Syria as troops carry out a crackdown on protest there. Soldiers are going from home to home and killing many, say eyewitnesses. Hundreds of Syrians, including many injured by gunfire, have entered Lebanon through the porous border just 5km from the town - despite Lebanese troops reinforcing the frontier, reportedly at Syria's request. Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr, reporting from Beirut, has more details.

Syria sees

Syria sees "relatively peaceful' protests

A relatively lower number of deaths and injuries of civilians have been reported as large anti-demonstrations were staged across Syria on Friday. Unlike previous Fridays, security forces mostly held their fire - reportedly on the orders of president Bashar al-Assad. But some activists say the reason for the lower number of casualties is a result of a low-turnout of protesters amid heavy military crackdowns and sieges across the country. Zeina Khodr reports on nationwide demonstrations that some activists said were dedicated to Syrian women imprisoned for protesting.

Shooting on Israel-Syria border

Syria's state TV says four Syrian protesters were shot dead by Israeli troops during a demonstration on the Syrian side of the border with the occupied Golan Heights. Dozens were injured in the shooting after hundreds walked across minefields, overwhelmed border guards and attempted to cross the border near the village of Majdal Shams. Eyewitness Salman Fakhreddin describes the scene to Al Jazeera.

Violence flares at Syrian protest

After online calls for a "day of dignity", protesters demanding an end to alleged government corruption took to the streets of cities across Syria on Friday. But they were met with a violent crackdown orchestrated by state security forces. In one video subsequently posted online, water cannon are used on crowds of protesters. Al Jazeera's Bernard Smith reports on the "Facebook youth" who appear to be keeping one step ahead of the authorities.

Crackdown on Syrian protests continues

Crackdown on Syrian protests continues

At least three people are believed to have been killed by security forces in the Syrian city of Latakia. The protesters on Saturday were calling for reform, but Buthaina Shabaan, an adviser to president Bashar Al-Assad, said the protests are a plan to exploit sectarian divides. She did not say who was behind the alleged plot. The government reportedly freed over 200 political prisoners on Saturday. Protests in Daraa have been going on for over a week and have spread to other parts of the country. In Latakia, snipers were said to be targeting protesters. In Tafas, people set fire to the office of the ruling Baath party and in Sanamin, security cracked down on protesters on Friday's Day of Dignity. Please be aware that some of the images in this report may be disturbing. Al Jazeera's Gerald Tan reports.

Inside Story: Conspiracy over Syria protests

Inside Story: Conspiracy over Syria protests

There is mounting international condemnation of Syria's handling of pro-democracy protests - as more people are killed on streets. Bashar al Assad's regime insists it is a foreign conspiracy against his country. Others suggest a more sinister third party is involved. Inside Story discusses with guests: Marwan Kabalan, a professor of political science from Damascus University; Lamis Andoni, a writer and political commentator on Middle East affairs; and Patrick Seale, a leading British writer on the middle east, and author of "Asad of Syria". This episode of Inside Story aired on Sunday, April 10, 2011.

President Bashar al-Assad has blamed 'conspirators' bent on destroying Syria for pro-democracy protests in the country. He was given a rapturous reception outside and inside parliament in Damascus, the day after a government-organised show of mass support. Despite speculation, there was no announcement about lifting Syria's emergency laws in Assad's first public speech since the challenge to his rule began.
