attack on us embassy in pakistan, peshawar
PESHAWAR, Pakistan ? A Taliban suicide bomber rammed his motorbike into an armored vehicle taking American officials to the US consulate in northwest Pakistan on Friday, in a strike the militants said was in revenge for the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Two Americans suffered minor injuries, but one Pakistani passer-by was killed and at least 10 others were wounded in the attack in the city of Peshawar, officials said. The strike was the first on Westerners since the May 2 raid by American commandos on bin Laden's hideout in an army town around three hours from Peshawar. The Pakistani Taliban, an al-Qaida-allied group behind scores of attacks in recent years, claimed responsibility. "We say to the Americans and NATO that we will carry out more deadly attacks and we can do it," Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan said in a phone call from an undisclosed location. "We had warned that we will avenge the martyrdom of Osama." The Americans were traveling in two cars from their homes to the heavily protected consulate building when the bomber on a motorbike struck one of the vehicles, said US Embassy spokesman Alberto Rodriguez. The Americans from the hit car were whisked away from the scene in the second vehicle. The most serious wound was a possible broken hand, he said. Pakistani police's initial reports contradicted Rodriguez's account by suggesting it was a car bomb, and made no mention of a suicide attacker. But the police were still investigating. Rodriguez declined to ...

Blast Kills at Least 70 Military Cadets in Pakistan ISLAMABAD, Pakistan ? More than 70 paramilitary soldiers were killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up Friday morning at a military training center in northwest Pakistan, a local police chief said. The bombing was the first major terrorist attack since the American raid in Abbottabad on May 2 that killed Osama bin Laden. It was not immediately clear if the attack was in revenge for the Americans' action. Local officials said that it was likely connected to the Pakistani Army assault against Taliban militants in the nearby mountainous region of Mohmand in Afghanistan. The suicide bomber attacked members of the Frontier Constabulary at Shabqadar Fort in the town of Charsadda as they were preparing for their graduation ceremony, said Liaqat Khan, the police chief in nearby Peshawar. The death toll was almost certain to rise and could end up to be the highest number of law enforcement officials to be killed in a terrorist attack in recent years, Mr. Khan said. At least 80 people were injured, officials said. The bomber was in a car outside the fort when he detonated the explosives about 6 am, just as the graduates were gathering for the graduation, which was scheduled to start two hours later. A second bomber was likely to be involved in the attack, Mr. Khan said. The bombing appears to be connected to militants who are fighting the Pakistan Army in Mohmand, a tribal region near Charsadda. timesofearth.com - Pakistan's Talban says it carried out Friday's twin suicide bomb attacks that killed 80 people as revenge for the death of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden. The militant group said the blasts in northwestern Pakistan were the "first revenge" for the killing of bin Laden. Pakistan authorities say nearly all the people killed Friday at the Frontier Constabulary training center in the Shabaqadar area of Charsadda district were newly trained cadets. Dozens of people were also wounded. Officials say the attack happened as the cadets were boarding vehicles to go home for a short break. Bin Laden was killed last week in a US military raid in the Pakistani northern garrison city of Abbottabad. PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- Twin bomb blasts targeting a paramilitary training centre in northwest Pakistan have killed at least 80 people, mostly paramilitary personnel, and wounded at least 100 others, police officials say. A police official said Friday's attack in Charsadda district appeared to be the work of two suicide bombers, though there was a possibility of the second bomb being planted. The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, terming it the "first revenge" for the killing of Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaeda leader who was killed by US forces in Abbottabad on May 2. "This was the first revenge for Osama's martyrdom. Wait for bigger attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan," Ehsanullah Ehsan, a spokesman for the group, told the AFP news agency. The ...
