Officials: 2 kidnapped Americans released in Egypt

  • The Americans were kidnapped in the Sinai peninsula, authorities said
  • The U.S. Embassy says it's working with Egyptian officials

(CNN) -- Two American tourists have been kidnapped in the southern part of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, a security official said Friday.

They were abducted by unknown Bedouins, said Gen. Mohamed Naguib, head of security in the region.

Egyptian authorities have confirmed the kidnapping to the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, said Katharina Gollner-Sweet, a spokeswoman for the embassy. She said the embassy is working with Egyptian officials to ensure the tourists' safety.

Additional details were not immediately available.
