The Department of Transport is to launch a consultation on increasing the speed limit on Britain's motorways from 70mph to 80mph.
It is understood that it is intended to introduce the change from 2013.
Transport Secretary Phillip Hammond was expected to announce the change at the start of the Conservative Party conference this weekend.
Supporters say quicker journeys could bring economic benefits and say 49% of people flout the 70mph limit anyway.
