Polish president Lech Kaczynski feared dead in Russian plane crash

www.timesofearth.com MOSCOW ? A plane carrying Lech Kaczynski, the Polish president, has crashed near Smolensk airport in western Russia, killing all 132 passengers on board, Russian and Polish officials say. Polish officials also confirmed on Saturday that Kaczynski was on board the flight with his wife, as well as Slawomir Skrzypek, the head of Poland's central bank, Andrzej Kremer, the deputy foreign minister and the army chief of staff. The Russian emergencies ministry told Itar-Tass news agency the plane crashed at 1056 Moscow time (0656 GMT). The Tupolev Tu-154 plane crashed on approach to Smolensk airport in foggy conditions. Sergei Antufiev, the governor of Russia's Smolensk region, told official media there were no survivors from the crash. "It clipped the tops of the trees, crashed down and broke into pieces," Antufiev told Russia-24 television. Rafal Kiepuszewski, a journalist monitoring the situation in Poland, said the news came as a shock to the Polish people. "The fact that much of the Polish political establishment appears to have been wiped out on this single flight has really come as a profound shock to the Polish nation," he said. The Polish government delegation was on its way to the city of Smolensk to take part in the 70th commemoration of the Katyn massacre - where Russian forces killed more than 20000 Polish soldiers. Kaczynski has served as president of Poland since 2005. Prior to that, he was mayor of Warsaw, the Polish capital ...

You're watching multisource world news from Newsy A Russian plane taking off from Moscow was forced to make an emergency landing after all three of its engines failed. The crash landing killed at least two people and injured dozens. (Video Source: RT) RT says the crew reported engine issues shortly after takeoff. During the landing, the plane rolled off the runway when one of the landing gears snapped off. The plane then broke into pieces with about 170 people on board. "There are two main versions of the causes of the crash. One of them is negligence and violation of safety standards. So of course in this case the Dagestan Airlines will have to bear responsibility and have to carry out investigation in that regard. The second version is that electrical failure of all systems, complete power failure on board is the reason for the jet, for the engine failure." The airport where the plane crash-landed is pretty far from the city. BBC News reports it took awhile for help to arrive. "The problem in Moscow is, of course, the traffic, even on a Saturday. Also, that the snowy conditions don't help, and there have been report that it took some of the ambulances quite some time to get to the airport and begin to begin to treat the passengers." An aviation consultant tells Charleston ABC radio affiliate WTMA the type of plane involved in the crash has a history of accidents and has mostly been phased out of Russia's fleet. 3 dead as plane explodes after catching fire while taxiing in Russia's Siberia

At least three people have been killed after a regional Russian airliner caught fire and exploded at an airport in the eastern Siberian city of Surgut. The Tupolev-154 was being used on Kolavia Airlines flight 348 bound for Moscow. The airliner was taxiing prior to take-off when a fire started on board. It is not yet clear what exactly caused the blaze, but according to some reports one of the turbines caught fire, perhaps due to a foreign object entering it. Eventually, one of the fuel tanks exploded. There were over a hundred passengers on board the plane, plus eight crew members. At least ten people are said to have been injured. According to one of those aboard the aircraft, panic broke out when passengers realized that the cabin was filled with smoke and sparks. Reports suggested that the passengers and the crew were evacuated before the blast. The plane was completely destroyed in the explosion. Injured passengers and those who suffered from smoke inhalation have reportedly been hospitalized. At least four of them are in critical condition. Of those who died, at least one person -- a 52-year-old woman -- most likely succumbed to severe burns. Investigators are currently working on the scene. A criminal case has been launched over suspected negligence and violation of safety procedures -- the preliminary suspected causes. The Tupolev-154 is Russia's most successful ever plane with around a thousand of them produced since 1968. The three-engine medium range passenger ...

Lucky Landing: Plane crashes in woods

Lucky Landing: Plane crashes in woods

Prosecutors are investigating the crash landing of a Russian airliner in the north-west of the country. There were 81 people on board the Tupolev-154M, which came down in the Republic of Komi. The jet was on its way to Moscow when it apparently suffered an electrical failure, forcing the pilots to divert it to the nearest airport. Their only option was an airfield designed for much smaller craft. The crash-landing saw the plane cross the short airstrip, and roll off several hundred metres into the woods. None of the people on board were injured, and the pilots have been praised for their efforts.

Flight 514 was over Usinsk,[1][3] at an altitude of 10600 m (FL 347) when the first signs of a problem was noticed at about 06:59 local time (02:59 UTC). Later, a complete loss of electrical systems occurred, which resulted in the loss of navigational systems and the loss of electric fuel pumps,[1][2] leaving the aircraft with just 3300 kilograms (7300 lb) of useable fuel,[3] enough for just 30 minutes flight.[4] The loss of the electrically driven pumps prevented transfer of fuel from the wing tanks to the main tank in the fuselage.[5] At about 07:47, the emergency authorities at Izhma were informed that the aircraft may be making an emergency landing at the airport there. Izhma Airport is a former airfield that is now used only for helicopters,[2] and the 1325-metre-long (4347 ft) runway is closed and abandoned.[2][5] The airfield, having closed to aircraft in 2003,[4] was not marked on then-current maps.[6] The passengers were moved to the front of the aircraft. The electrical failure also caused a loss of the radio system, flaps and slats.[3] Two attempts to land were aborted. On the third attempt,[5] a successful emergency landing was made at Izhma at 07:55 local time,[2] but the aircraft overran the runway by 160 metres (520 ft),[3] and sustained minimal damage in the process.[1] The aircraft was landed at a speed of 350 to 380 kilometres per hour (190 to 210 kn) due to the lack of flaps. Although the flaps are powered by hydraulics, the switches operating them are ...
